About this article
This answer page by Dimitrios Petikas of DP1 DESIGN (New Orleans AI SEO agency, founded 2001) explains how to optimize a website for Perplexity AI: crawler access, direct answers, question headings, dates and authorship, FAQ schema, llms.txt, consistent business facts, and off-site mentions. Contact: (504) 247-4345.
The short answer
To optimize a website for Perplexity, allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in robots.txt, answer the question in the first 40 words of each page, use one clear heading per question, show a visible publish date, mark up FAQs with schema, and keep facts consistent across your site and your business listings. Perplexity cites pages it can read, understand quickly, and trust.
Perplexity is an answer engine, not a search engine. When someone asks it a question, it runs a live web search, reads a small number of pages, writes a short answer, and attaches numbered citations to the pages it used. Your goal is to be one of those citations. Three things decide that:
- Can it reach the page? Perplexity uses its own crawler (PerplexityBot) to index pages and a second agent (Perplexity-User) that fetches a page live when a person asks a question. Block either one and you are invisible.
- Can it find the answer fast? Perplexity reads for extraction. Pages that state the answer up front, under a heading that matches the question, get pulled in. Pages that bury the answer under a 400-word introduction get skipped.
- Does it trust the page? Recency, a named author, consistent business facts, and being cited elsewhere all raise the odds of selection.
How to optimize a website for Perplexity AI: the 8-step checklist
1. Let the crawlers in
Add both agents to robots.txt and make sure nothing at the CDN level blocks them. Cloudflare's bot settings can silently challenge AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Perplexity-User
Allow: /
Check your server log for both names. If you never see them, something upstream is stopping them.
2. Answer the question in the first paragraph
Every page that targets a question should open with a two or three sentence answer. No warm-up, no history lesson. Perplexity quotes that paragraph almost verbatim when it cites you. Put the detail below it.
3. Match headings to the way people ask
Use the real question as the heading: "How much does a website cost in New Orleans?" beats "Pricing." Look in Google Search Console for question queries you already show up for and give each one its own heading or its own page.
4. Show a date and an author
Perplexity favors recent pages. Show a visible "Updated" date, keep it honest, and refresh pages that matter every few months. Name a real author with a bio page. Anonymous pages lose to signed ones.
5. Mark it up
Add FAQPage schema to question sections, Article or BlogPosting schema to posts, and Organization or LocalBusiness schema sitewide with the same name, address, and phone you use everywhere else. Perplexity does not need schema to read a page, but structured data removes ambiguity about who you are and what the page answers.
6. Publish llms.txt
Put a plain-text summary of your business, services, and key pages at /llms.txt. It is a small file that gives AI systems a clean map of your site and your facts.
7. Keep your facts identical everywhere
Perplexity cross-checks. If your website says one address and your Google Business Profile says another, or your founding year differs between LinkedIn and your About page, you look less reliable. Match every listing to the site.
8. Earn mentions off-site
Perplexity leans on sources it already trusts: industry directories, review platforms, news, and reference sites. When those pages mention your business, your own pages get cited more. This is the slowest step and the one most companies skip.
In one line: be reachable, answer first, prove who you are, and be consistent everywhere else.
How to optimize content for Perplexity
Content that gets cited has a shape:
- One question per section. Do not stack three ideas under one heading.
- Numbers and specifics. "Most small business sites cost $4,000 to $12,000" gets cited. "Prices vary" does not.
- Short paragraphs. Two to four sentences. Perplexity extracts, it does not read for pleasure.
- Lists and tables for comparisons. They survive extraction cleanly.
- A summary sentence at the end of each section that restates the answer.
- Original data. A number you measured yourself is something no competitor page has, and it is exactly the kind of thing an answer engine wants to attribute.
How to measure whether it worked
- Server logs. Count PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User requests per week. Rising Perplexity-User hits mean real people are getting answers built from your pages.
- Analytics. Set up an "AI Assistant" channel in Google Analytics 4 that groups referrals from perplexity.ai, chatgpt.com, claude.ai, and gemini.google.com.
- Ask it. Once a month, ask Perplexity the questions your customers ask and record whether you are cited. Do it from a clean session, not a logged-in one.
- Grid scans. For local businesses, tools like Local Falcon can run the same question across a map grid and score how often you are named.
What does not work
- Keyword stuffing. Perplexity summarizes meaning, not keyword density.
- Hiding text or injecting instructions aimed at AI models. It is detectable and it gets pages dropped.
- Publishing a hundred thin pages. One page that answers a question completely beats twenty that gesture at it.
- Blocking AI crawlers "to protect content" while hoping to be cited. You cannot have both.

Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity use Google's index?
No. Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, and fetches pages live with Perplexity-User when a person asks a question. Ranking well on Google helps because Google-ranked pages tend to be well structured, but it is not a requirement.
How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity?
Pages that are crawlable and well structured can appear in citations within days of publishing, because Perplexity retrieves live. Building enough authority to be cited consistently for competitive questions takes months.
Do I need llms.txt for Perplexity?
It is not required. It helps AI systems understand your site quickly and it costs nothing to add, so we include it on every site we build.
Should I block PerplexityBot to protect my content?
Only if you never want to appear in Perplexity answers. Blocking the crawler removes you from consideration entirely.
Is optimizing for Perplexity different from optimizing for ChatGPT?
The fundamentals are the same: crawler access, direct answers, clean structure, consistent facts. Perplexity puts more weight on recency and live retrieval; ChatGPT leans more on Bing's index and on what it learned in training. A page built for one usually works for the other.
Can a local business get cited by Perplexity?
Yes. Ask Perplexity for a plumber or a web designer in a specific city and it cites local pages and directories. Location pages with a direct answer, real address, and consistent listings are the way in.
